This video covers Earth to Mars and Earth to Venus Hohmann transfers. This covers the cases of how hohmann transfers can be used to either raise or lower an orbit. This video covers all the calculations necessary for delta V, semi major axis, and time of flight.
Hohmann transfers are the most efficient two impulse transfer between two circular orbits. Note that its two impulse, since in some cases bi-elliptical transfers with 3 impulses can have a lower delta V than hohmann.
When doing a hohmann transfer to raise an orbit, both of the maneuvers increase the velocity of the spacecraft, so the thrust is in the direction of the velocity vector. This is opposite with lowering an orbit, where the spacecraft must slow itself down on both maneuvers, so the thrust is in the opposite direction of the velocity vector.
At the end, I go over the numbers for an Earth to Mars hohmann transfer and then talk about all the simplifying assumptions made and some things to consider when wanting to do more high fidelity simulations.
