THOUSANDS GATHER TO PAY RESPECTS TO B'WOOD VETERAN
Sunil Dutt, a Bollywood actor and federal government minister, died Wednesday of a heart attack at his Bombay residence.. He was 75.
Dutt had been sick with a high fever for four days before the heart attack, said D. Suresh, one of his employees.
Thousands of fans crowded outside Dutt's home after news of his death was flashed on television, watching as a procession of government leaders and Bollywood celebrities paid their respects to is family.
The federal government declared Wednesday a national day of mourning.
Dutt, who was Youth Affairs and Sports Minister with the ruling Congress coalition government, was a popular politician and one of the first actors from Bombay's huge movie industry to enter politics. He was elected five times as a member of parliament in his local Bombay constituency, Bandra.
Dutt successfully juggled politics and his acting career - his latest movie 'Munnabhai Meets Mahatma Gandhi,' a sequel to the 2003 hit comedy 'Munnabhai MBBS,' began shooting at the start of this month.
He was a versatile actor, appearing in blockbusters 'Mother India,' 'Yaadein' ('Memories'), 'Waqt' ('Time') and 'Milan' ('Union') in a career spanning five decades.
His acting career took off after his 1957 hit film 'Mother India' was nominated for an Oscar in the best foreign film category that year.
Dutt also directed six movies including 'Reshma aur Shera' ('Reshma and Shera') in 1971 and 'Dard ka Rishta' ('Ties of Pain') in 1982.
He was married to Nargis, a popular Indian actress who died in 1981.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress party president Sonia Gandhi were among the top politicians who visited the family in suburban Bombay. Gandhi described Dutt as 'a special human being.' He was a 'truly secular person,' she said,'an untiring politician and a family friend.'
Bollywood personalities such as Amitabh Bachchan and his actor son Abhishek, script writer and lyricist Gulzar and actor-politician Shabana Azmi were among those who paid their respects to Dutt.
Dutt was cremated late Wednesday.
He is survived by a son, popular Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, and two daughters.
