Is it a painting or is it an illustration? If a painting on a small canvas then focus on broad shapes, values and gesture rather than details. I also look at getting basic proportions correct by using the box method, the brush handle and comparing shape relationships. The result is a painterly figure that is not overworked with fiddly detail.
