Okay so I complained about how the US didn’t get these headlights, but the cooler part is the technology. Basically, each of the LEDs in the headlight corresponds to a section of the space in front of the vehicle. Cars use a camera or sometimes radar to detect other cars, and if the system sees another car on the road, it will dim the LEDs in that area. Where this gets cool is how fast this technology is advancing. 10 years ago, Porsche introduced their dot matrix headlights, and now they’ve upgraded and called it LED matrix headlights. What’s the difference? Well the first version had 84 individually addressable LEDs per headlight, and this new version has 32000 (yes thousand, not hundred) LEDs per headlight. That opens the possibility to really cool things like illuminating an entire pedestrian except their eyes. Or something that Porsche is already doing, which is illuminating the lane you’re currently in as a sort of guide for the driver.
