The combustion of alcohol in a whoosh bottle. This is a popular demonstration of the following reaction:
Alcohol + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water
In this case I am using methanol, which is very volatile. Most people would use ethanol or isopropanol, which are less volatile and therefore a bit safer to work with.
There are a couple of things you can do at the end, although I totally forgot to do either:
1. Quickly seal the top of the bottle with your hand. As the air inside cools down a vacuum will be formed and the air pressure outside the bottle will push the sides in.
2. Pour out the water produced by the combustion reaction.
