The Shumen fortress played a leading role in all eras. Six cultural layers tell its story. Life here began with a fortified settlement of the Thracian tribe Getae (V-II centuries BC). The Romans turned the fortification into a dominant fortress at an important crossroads (II–IV centuries). During the time of Emperor Justinian I (527-565), it guarded the approaches to Stara Planina. Repeatedly destroyed by invasions, after a short interruption, life here is always restored. In the 10th century, the fortification regained its strategic functions. In the Late Middle Ages (XIII-XIV centuries) it became one of the most important urban centers of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
