Stainless steel Grade 303 is the most machinable among the austenitic grades of stainless steel alloy group ( 301, 302, 304, 316, 347)


The properties in 303 stainless steel contains Sulphur in the alloy which makes this very machinable. However, the Sulphur also cuts down the corrosion resistance of the steel slightly reducing its toughness. Despite this the toughness is still of a high quality as with other austenitic grades.
Welding of 303 Stainless is not recommended as the sulphur present in 303 makes the welding very difficult and gives you poor results. If for any reason it is unavoidable then use 308L or 309 for electrodes. 303 must be annealed for optimal corrosion protection.
