VICTIM ADVOCATES
In every criminal matter, there are two sides: The state and the defendant. Victims are not a party to the case, and prosecutors do not represent them. But police departments in Nevada have victim advocates units devoted to aiding victims during criminal cases and their aftermath. Here are three things to know about victim advocates:
1. Advocates provide crisis intervention, referrals to organizations offering emotional and financial support, and education about Nevada’s Victim’s Bill of Rights, which includes the right to reasonable protection from the defendant.
2. Advocates instruct victims about how to stay informed about criminal cases. For instance, Clark County’s Victim-Witness Assistant Center notifies victims about defendants’ bail amounts, custody status, and whether they get convicted.
3. Advocates can help victims file a claim with the Victims of Crime Program. This provides up to $35,000 in financial help. But the victim must have been reported the crime to the police within five days of the incident (unless the victim was incapable of doing so).
If at all possible, crime victims should also consult with an attorney. Victim advocates are an important resource. But having an attorney is the best way to safeguard your rights.
