The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci, 1495 - 1498
Jesus was to be betrayed by one of his disciples, he gathered them all together to eat and to tell them that he knew what was coming, with reactions of shock and rage from the Apostles.
“The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me".
Judas, who sits with the group to Jesus’ right, reach toward the same dish with Jesus, an act that marks Judas as the betrayer.
Peter, sitting next to Judas' right and behind, moves toward John who appears to be swooning, is holding a knife in his hand that he will later use to sever the ear of a soldier attempting to arrest Jesus.
To the right of Jesus are Thomas, James and Philip. Thomas' finger is pointing up in the air. It is widely believed that this gesture is key in a later Bible story when Jesus rises from the dead.
John, sitting next to Jesus, appears to swoon after hearing the bad news. On the other hand, many say "John", who is only person in the painting wearing a necklace, maybe a woman, or at the very least, not John.
On the far right of Jesus are Bartholomew, James Minor and Andrew. Andrew's (on the right) hands are thrown up in a "stop" gesture with shock. James (in the middle) also throws out both hands and opens his mouth.
Sitting on the far left of Jesus are Matthew, Thaddeus, and Simon. Both Thaddeus and Matthew turn toward Simon and seem trying to find out if he has any answer to the betrayal.
Jesus’ serene composure, with his head and eyes lowered, hands reaching for bread and wine, contrasts with the agitation, shock and rage of the Apostles.
