UPDATE: NYPD has released that the body IS confirmed to be Etika.
The body of an unidentified man was found in the East River in New York City on Monday night, police said. There was no immediate word on whether it’s related to YouTube star Etika, who disappeared last week.
At 6:18 p.m., police responded to a 911 call for a person floating in the water near the South Street Seaport. Officers pulled an unresponsive man from the river and took him to Pier 16, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing,” an NYPD spokesperson told BNO News. “Identification of the deceased is pending proper family notification.”
Pier 16 is near the Brooklyn Bridge and about half a mile from the Manhattan Bridge, where Etika’s personal belongings were found. Police declined to say whether Monday’s discovery is related to the search for Etika.
“The medical examiner will confirm identification,” a police spokesperson said on late Monday night. A spokeswoman for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Etika, whose real name is Desmond Amofah, has a history of mental health issues and was last heard from on Wednesday night. Hours later, an 8-minute video was automatically uploaded to YouTube in which he alluded to wanting to commit suicide.
The New York Police Department confirmed on Saturday night that Etika’s personal property was found on the Manhattan Bridge. This included his cell phone, a Nintendo Switch, a laptop bag containing clothes, and other personal items.
