This car racing engine for GameMaker features box2d physics based collisions, laps, drifting, skidmarks, race positions and teleporting if you leave the track. It is modelled on the core gameplay features from MicroMachines. Version 1.2 now features handling for different types of cars, such as rally car (drifty), go kart (zippy), Formula 1 (more downforce), truck (heavy and drifty), and motorbike (laser sharp), and more. Obstacles can be hit. Gamepad and keyboard can be used. Press ESC or Start to access the pause menu in the game. Sound has not yet been implemented.
The engine is open source, so feel free to start creating top down racers in GameMaker! It would be good to see some more of them being made.

I'm using this engine to make a sequel to my original game 'Sneaky Ways', but you can do anything with it that you like.
