Twelve years ago, the Maldives pole and line skipjack tuna fishery became the first Indian Ocean tuna fishery to be certified to the MSC’s Standard for sustainable fishing. Responding to the global demand for sustainably sourced tuna, the Maldives government, business, eNGOs and fishers have worked hard together to make sustainable skipjack tuna fishing a thriving part of the economy in this Indian Ocean country where pole and line fishing runs "in the blood".
