The fire was not brought under control in 22 hours
Although 22 hours have passed since the fire broke out at the BM container depot at Sonaichhari Union in Sitakunda, Chittagong, the fire has not been brought under control yet. Firefighters are speeding to bring the fire under control. Six firefighters have already been killed in a container explosion while trying to put out the fire. 15 people were injured.
As of 6:30 pm on Sunday, 26 fire service and civil defense teams were trying to put out the blazeBesides, officers from Chittagong, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, Comilla, Feni, Laxmipur and Noakhali have joined. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said 250 members of the army were working on the rescue operation.
According to the fire service, the container depot contained a large amount of the chemical "hydrogen peroxide". Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound. Due to this it is not possible to control the fire.
According to sources, the fire is believed to have started from a chemical container. After the fire started, the containers started exploding one after another.
Witnesses said the blast caused a massive tremor in an area of 4-5 km around the container depot. The windows of hundreds of different houses and mosques were shattered in an area of about one kilometer. This incident created panic in the minds of the people.
The blast sent chemical toxic fumes into the area. The rescuers fell ill. More units of the fire service joined them in putting out the fire. However, the fire could not be brought under control as there was hydrogen peroxide in the depot, said Director General of Fire Service (DG) Brigadier General Md. Main Uddin.
While inspecting the site of the blaze at the BM container depot in Sitakunda, Chittagong on Sunday, Tofazzal Hossain, an inspector at the Chittagong Explosives Department, said hydrogen peroxide was a chemical compound. If it is heated, hydrogen peroxide in thermal dissociation takes the form of terrifying explosives. Authorities stored hazardous chemicals inside the local depot without heeding any approval, leading to a major accident in the blast.
According to local and fire service sources, the fire started at 9:30 pm on Saturday from an imported container at BM Container Depot in Sonaichhari Union of the upazila. As of 6:30 pm on Sunday, the death toll had risen to 49. More than 450 people were burnt and injured in the incident.
