The music therapy profession is not immune to the problems of racial inequity. Unfortunately, the use of music within our practices continues to be centered around Western culture. This calls on all of us to do some serious inner work, reflect on our individual privileges and biases, and make changes in the way we practice. We have an obligation to each other and to our clients to heighten our awareness and do better. In order for us to truly create community and enhance wellbeing through music, we need to honor and include other narratives in our music making. For me, this looks like making sure my own resources and continuing education come from a variety of voices, as well as making the dive into embracing and exploring my own culture, rather than running away from it.
