Let's understand Head and Neck Cancer. Head and Neck Cancer is a collective umbrella term which is given for group of cancers which could be from your lip cancer throat tongue cancer cheek cancer jaw cancer. Risk factors in head and cancers could be because of smoking. Smoking tobacco in alcohol consumption together work as synergistic and it could be because of racial ethnicity. Could be genetic could be because of HPV induced cancers which are viral and they could be because of sexual contact and other than this there could be radiation exposure as well . So screening has become a very important part in oral head and neck cancers. The reason is these cancers can present in both habit profile and non-habit profile patients. So the ones with a habit profile like tobacco chewing or smoking or alcohol consumption have to have a mandatory annual screening of oral as well as head and neck region and the ones without the habit profile could be because of sharp tooth or could be non-traumatic ulcers or traumatic ulcers could be some lumps in the throat and neck region. So various reasons the manual screening is considered to be very important in trying to detect the cancer at its earliest. So what do screening consist of screening consists of particular scan like CT, MRI . Then it consists of physical examination as well as checking for tissue which is condemned like taking a tissue bit in that area through a biopsy checking for any lumps in the throat neck region through an FNAC and FNAC is an fine needle cytology where we see the cells directly which are trapped within the lymphomes. These are very simple in office procedures painless and can be done within an hour or so and eventually if you are detected with a cancer. There is a lot of stigma and fear associated with the term cancer itself but to understand the disease is to treat the disease better in order to treat the disease better. Do not waste a lot of time in trying to evaluate different treatments for head and a cancers most treatments are very very specific algorithm based and they are the best ways to treat and increase the survival rate.
