Off late travelling from Guwahati to Shillong especially during weekends and longish Holidays have become a big challenge due to heavy traffic especially at Jorabat and Umiam to Shilling section. Moreover driving into Shillong is now a humoungous challenge due to more than capacity Tourist inflow especially during Holidays.. However, Q new route was opened last year starting from Guwahati/ Rani/Azara area entering Meghalaya Via Chabdubi Forest area driving towards Mairang. At Mairang if anyone wants to travel towards
Nongstoin which is another Tourist hotspot of Meghalaya can take a right turn from Mairang while those going towards Shillong or Cherrapunjee can take the road on the left. Enroute to Shillong lookout for the right turn which joins the usual Shillong Cherrapunjee route. This way you can straight away go towards Cherrapunjee totally avoiding the hassle of crossing Shillong altogether. Moreover you will also come across a marking which indicates towards a road going towards Jowai. However please note that this route should not be done at night not because I persee any trouble but because while entering Meghalaya from Assam side to Meghalaya you will have to cross a heavy forested area of Chandubi. Moreover being a new route there are virtually not touristy Dhabas or restaurants enroute. However there are many villages and village market areas dotting the highway where you can find local styled tiny food joints. Although people with restricted food habits beware as almost all joints sell Beef or Pork items. However those who love to explore local food and lifestyle May find it interesting.
PS If you want to take this route just typing Guwahati to Shillong will not show you this route. Put point to point location as Guwahati to Mairang then Mairang to Shillong or Cherrapunjee or wherever you want to go.
