🟡#Myth 1: No Job, No Need to Pay Alimony
Even though this might hold true to some extent, the amount of alimony is decided through different criteria. Quitting your job will only modify the payment methods and provide you with some more time instead of completely eliminating alimony. Even if you don’t have a job, alimony can be awarded based on your financial assets.
🟡#Myth 2: Alimony Is Only for Women
This has to be one of my most popular myths. However, this is absolutely false, and there is no such thing in the law. Alimony is decided based on both spouses' income and their financial status, regardless of gender. As the number of earning women is increasing in society, many husbands handle the household. In such situations, men can also claim money. There is no gender-specific clause in the law for alimony. It can be claimed by anyone who needs it.
🟡#Myth 3: Alimony Is Half of the Income of the Paying Spouse
Alimony doesn’t try to equalise the financial status of both parties; rather, it is decided on the basis of the financial needs of the party receiving by the court. It focuses on maintaining the standard of living of both spouses rather than financial conditions.
🟡#Myth 4: Alimony Is a Right for a Spouse
Child support is mandatory, but that’s not the case with alimony. While your spouse has the potential to demand money in front of the law, no one is directly entitled to receive it, and in some cases, it might not be given at all.
🟡#Myth 5: Alimony Is Just Free Money
It is a popular belief that alimony money can be used in any way by the recipient. But, the main purpose of alimony is to support one’s living and not for any kind of frivolous purchases. It is a taxable amount, and if the court is aware of the money’s misuse, it may be stopped.
