Unlike other log home building methods, LHBA's Butt & Pass log cabins can use logs that most builders would say aren't useful at all. LHBA method is very forgiving on the type of logs you can use. This log was extremely crooked. However with a lot of TLC, and some chain binders and chains, we were able to straighten this log out nicely and make it fit in place. First, pin the end of the log that is the straightest. This will be the butt end of the log most of the time. Pin it up just before the point where it gets really crooked. Now start making your cuts on the other end- in this log's case, I cut it so it would butt up against the corresponding pass log. Use two chain binders and two chains spaced within arm's reach (usually on each side of your ladder). Bind one chain down as tight as you can. Then bind the other chain down as tight as it will go. The first chain should get loose, so tighten it some more. Alternate tightening the two chains until the log bends into place. Once in place, drill and pin that sucker so it won't move. Don't release the chain binders until you are done. I was able to get about 4' of crook out of my logs with this method.
