Common Blue Violet( (Viola Sororia), Is it a Good Weed?
The common blue violet is a perennial plant species widespread in Central and Eastern America, Canada and the eastern part of Mexico. The Viola Sororia plant prefers clay soil types, rich humus or loam. This wildflowers thrives well in humid forests, meadows and fields, it can also be seen in suburban lawns, city parks, busy roadsides, sidewalk cracks & overgrown lots. Common blue violet is an annual ground cover plant that may grow up to ten centimeters high that often forms dense beds. This plant can live and reproduce for over more than one hundred years. The roots can be useful for controlling soil erosion and stabilizing shorelines. The leaves of the common blue violet are dark green, heart-or oval shaped. The flowers have five petals and are dark to light violet. The Viola Sororia flowers are beneficial to pollinator species, like bees and butterflies. This plant can spread well and can form a small colonies. It's not a bad weed to have in the lawn, it is beautiful and also the young leaves and flowers are edible. Just make sure to harvest them from clean locations, not sprayed with any chemicals or soil free from contamination.
