Speaker Biography: Mary Roach is a best-selling author and writer known for her popular science and humor work. Her articles have appeared in many publications including Discover, Outside, National Geographic, New Scientist, Reader's Digest, Wired and The New York Times Magazine. Roach has received an Engineering Journalism Award and a Rushdie Award for outstanding lifetime achievement in cultural humanism. In addition, her 2009 TED talk was featured on TED's 2011 Twenty Most-Watched to Date list and her article "How to Win at Germ Warfare" was a National Magazine Award finalist. Roach's books include "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers," "Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void," "Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex," "Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal" and "Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife." Her latest book, "Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War" , explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected and uninfested in the extreme circumstances of war. Roach lives with her family in California.
