Ontario reported 3,519 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, a new single-day record in the province since the start of the pandemic. The provincial total now stands at 204,145.
Thursday’s case count surpasses the previous one-day record set on Jan. 2 of 3,363 new cases.
The total death toll in the province has risen to 4,856 as 89 more deaths were reported – the largest increase in a day ever recorded by the province. The previous record was during the first wave on April 30, with 86 deaths.
Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams announced Thursday that elementary school students in the southern regions of the province would continue online learning until Jan. 25 due to “increasing community transmission” of the coronavirus. Schools in the northern regions of Ontario, he said, can open for in-class attendance though the region will remain in a province-wide lockdown until Jan. 23.
