How I create fun drum sections inspired by modern jazz / metal / prog-fusion / dnb or jungle drummers like Richard Spaven, Yussef Dayes, Matt Gartska, JD Beck and Nate Smith.
Specifically, this is a commentary on my entire process programming the drums for my recreation of Nobuo Uematsu's "Under Her Control", from the videogame Final Fantasy VIII as part of the @CactuarCollective project.

In my previous videos about programming drums & AD2, I've used pretty short looping beats or grooves that were about 16 bars long or so, to show some basic concepts and how to get started. This differs in that I'm working on a full song arrangement.
I've been asked before how I get away from 'loopiness' when making tracks in software and how to develop ideas beyond a little 8 or 16-bar loop into a full track, which is basically what I'm doing in this video, at least for the drums parts.
Even if you're not into FF music, I think there's some useful tips in here when it comes to programming realistic drums with AD, particularly if you're into any of the other artists or styles i've mentioned.
I've narrated over this months after doing it, to explain my thought process behind certain decisions and what I think contributes to a realistic sound with programmed drums. I thought this was worth uploading as it's a full real thing I've used in an actual release, vs something I've put together in order to demonstrate a technique for a Youtube video.
I set my screen to record and forgot about it, and just got creative without thinking about anything else, so this is a real-world example of how I go about this process. As a result, I do quite a few things I've not mentioned in other vids about AD2.
It took me about 40 minutes to program the 1-minute & 30 seconds worth of drums here - I've left this mostly un-edited, in order to show the full process from start to finish in detail and hopefully not gloss over anything.
If you'd like to get this sort of punchy and modern realistic kit sound in AD2, check out my video on that topic here:
