TMS utilizes pulses of magnetic energy, similar to those produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, to stimulate nerve cells in the areas of the brain known to control mood. This is done by placing an electromagnetic coil against the scalp near the forehead. TMS therapy is an effective alternative treatment for depression and creates a significant positive response in the majority of patients.
