Ep. 146 FINISHING THREE MOSAICS AND A GOOD START ON THE ST. LUKE MOSAIC!
Hello viewers! Thanks for reading the video description. This week I have a special studio buddy, Seymour visiting.
I begin by finishing up the St. Matthew mosaic. I started it in this video: [ Ссылка ] I am working on a commission of the Four Evangelists (St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John) for a local church. They have requested the symbolic representations in stained glass mosaic.
0:56 The last few feathers on the right wing are laid in a bed of Latricrete 254 Platinum thinset. Each feather is white with a gray shadow.
2:10 I stop for a minute and show how I cut the thin outline pieces by hand with my nippers. Some of the pieces are curved to fit around curvy areas.
3:20 Every time a bell rings, and angel gets his wings! Then I start in on the sky, which is an ombre from light to dark blue. Finished. YAY!!!! Seymour gives his snort of approval.
4:40 Next up: finishing the feather-cut stained glass petals on the yellow sunflower. I already have an inventory of pieces, so now I can focus on fitting and gluing them down. There is a bit of yellow orange action going on in some of the petals.
6:45 The orange tips go in on the petals. Finished piecing. YAY!!! Seymour takes his sweet time walking in the yard.
7:30 I bit of talk about plywood and warped wood that bows. Meh. I switch things around so I can use the flatter MDF for the next two.
8:42 Introducing St. Luke and the problematic lettering. It gets fixed so it is not distracting and I can get after it! Seymour eats some breakfast, the letters are fixed, the shelf paper is positioned and the mesh is laid. Then I trace some of the design so I can see it better. YAY again!!! Sneak peak of St. John, which is also prepped. Seymour ventures across the bridge.
11:36 I grout a background for a vase of flowers in an itty bitty frame. The vase of flowers was created on some tape since the base wasn't ready. So now I just need to transfer it. I am using E6000 for jewelry and beads that has a precision tip. I find it 1. Doesn't smell so bad since it barely comes out of the tube and 2. Oozes out at the perfect rate to just tweeze my piece over the tip to put the adhesive in place. 3. This method has a bunch of glue strings that need to be cleaned up at the end, but it was a good way to work! Finished piecing. YAY!!! The flowers will not be grouted, so now I'm done! I'm sort of amazed that I was able to fit a dozen roses on such a small mosaic. Seymour takes a nap in the sun.
15:05 More grouting - this time I have mixed up white GROUT with Colorant Brand yellow powdered tint. I have another bit of grout with terra cotta mixed in, and I'm ready to start grouting! I end up using the terra cotta just on the tips. I use a lazy susan to turn the mosaic as I am working. After it has set up a bit I wipe off the haze, take off the tape and it's finished. YAY!!! Seymour walks near the azaleas!
17:16 Time to start on St. Luke. I start with the irises of the eyes, making them both a bit more rounded than the original sketch. The original image is much lighter than my print out and I will be making it like the original image. I get into a terrific work groove, knocking out the cheeks, bridge of the nose, the forehead, outer and inner ears, and snout with nostrils. YAY!!!
It's been a great week. I finished piecing St. Matthew, the sunflower, prepped the next two Evangelists, grouted the bitty background and finished the little flower arrangement, grouted the sunflower, and am off to a great start on St. Luke! Phew! Plus Seymour was a great little addition.
That's Putting It Together Ep. 146. Thanks for watching. See you next time!
