High above the foothills of the Rothaar Mountains, Biedenkopf Castle towers enthroned in a fortified complex with its distinctive keep.
It is the landmark of the city of the same name that can be seen from afar.
In the 12th century, the complex with high walls and keep served to protect the settlement, which was able to develop into a center for textile handicrafts.
Owned by various landgraves, the castle was expanded with residential towers and finally became a residence in the 15th century.
The castle was actually intended to serve as a widow's residence, but the landgrave's family never moved into it. At that time, the decision was made to live in the castle in Marburg.
Anyway! Between 1577 and 1842, the castle was then used as a substitute granary, where the peasant taxes were stored.
And it is probably thanks to this circumstance that the castle has been preserved in excellent condition.
Because elsewhere the old castles were almost always used as quarries and as a result many castles have disappeared or are only preserved as ruins with a few stones.
Nowadays, a visit to the old castle gives us an excellent insight into the history of the castle and the entire region.
In the exhibition rooms of the Hinterland Museum, an extensive collection of traditional costumes and many things from the local region awaits us.
In addition, the historic building itself is worth a visit. Let your gaze wander and enjoy the moment!
