If you've never been to Taiwan, here's a quick guide to the top sites and things to do in and around Taipei.
The best view of Taipei is from Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building. You’ll see how expansive the city is, and you’ll also see the mountains with hiking trails a short distance away.
My favorite part is the tuned mass damper. A giant suspended metal ball reduces the building’s sway during earthquakes and storms. And this is one of the only dampers on public display in the world.
Taipei's MRT system (subway) is clean, efficient, and easy to use.
Rides are usually about 80-cents.
Trains will take you all over Taiwan, creating the perfect opportunity for day trips to historic towns outside Taipei.
Shifen is popular, for its suspension bridge hike which brings you to the waterfalls, referred to as the "Niagara Falls" of Taiwan.
Jiufen is another day trip I’d recommend.
An old abandoned mining town is now a big long market, with cafes offering beautiful views all the way up to the coast.
Keelung is on the coast, and home to its own bustling market, plus a wet market where they sell whatever the boats have brought in. Nearby, you can hike along the coast and explore the Elephant Trunk Rock and other interesting rock formations on the beach.
Wulai is another scenic option for a day trip.
Back in Taipei, you can sample all kinds of interesting cuisine at the various night markets.
You’ll have dozens to choose from, and one nearby no matter where you stay.
