Sweetness of artificial sweeteners may stimulate the release of insulin, as the sweet taste alone may trigger a conditioned response in the body.
However, this response is much smaller compared to the insulin response elicited by consuming actual sugar or high-carbohydrate foods.
Studies have shown that if you replace the high sugar food with artificial sweeteners, there is definitely a decrease in calorie intake , decrease in insulin response - which will help in weight loss in short term.
However. recent studies show that regular consumption of artificial sweeteners may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Although the data is not extremely strong and the risk is not significantly high, there is evidence suggesting a potential link.
A recent WHO recommendation says that using non-nutritive sweeteners as an intervention is not an effective means to lose weight over the long term or reduce the risk for chronic disease.
