Fantastic 87th Precinct Mystery, based on the 1968 book of the same name by Ed McBain.
Strong characters, and a cast list that includes Burt Reynolds as Detective Steve Carella, Tom Skerritt as Detective Burt Kling, Jack Weston as Detective Meyer Meyer - plus for this story, Raquel Welch as Detective Eileen McHenry and Yul Brynner as The Deaf Man.
Evan Hunter wrote the "87th Precinct" novels under the name Ed McBain, but for this film, he is credited with the screenplay under his own name, with the name McBain for "based on the novel by."
A terrific book, and this film captures its mood pretty well - with some strong graphic storylines and visuals.
Yul Brynner does well as a smooth criminal mastermind, and Reynolds and Welch play their parts admirably.
Has a strange ending final shot - not sure why, but maybe they envisaged a sequel - Fuzz 2 maybe.
Anyway it never came to pass.
Another favourite film from my long ago teens, recalling less politically correct times.
Resolution increased to HD.
