The late April/early May bank holiday weekend saw a bit of Great Western action in deep Southern Region territory, as 4079 'Pendennis Castle' and 5239 'Goliath' took starring roles at the Mid Hants Railway's 2023 spring steam gala. Visiting courtesy of the Great Western Society at Didcot Railway Centre, Pendennis was fresh from a successful few weeks at the Severn Valley Railway. Goliath, meanwhile, was very much a last minute addition to the gala lineup, in a very rare appearance away from its home on the Dartmouth Steam Railway. It was later revealed that the loco will be staying on at the MHR for their summer season.
During this video, we see the pair of Westerners getting stuck into the 1 in 60/80 gradients on offer at the Hants, with Pendennis bringing the noise (and the steam! 👀) with a load of 6 coaches, while Goliath puts in some pleasantly jaunty performances on both passenger and freight workings.
