2. SOUNDBITE (English) Emma Capron, associate curator of Renaissance painting, National Gallery:
"The painting to my right is an icon of the National Gallery. In the U.K., she's especially famous because she formed the basis, inspired John Tenniel's hugely popular illustrations for the first edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. And so, as such, she's become a superstar. Everyone knows this image. Everyone recognises her when they come to the National Gallery. Yet few actually know who painted the original picture, when and where. And this is what the exhibition starts to do, is to reintroduce this famous work to our public and introduce the Renaissance context that saw this image develop."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Emma Capron, associate curator of Renaissance painting, National Gallery:
"She's holding a rosebud, which is already drooping and kind of sagging, which she presents, hopefully, to the old man who is her companion piece. And he's much more soberly dressed. He has a much more conventional profile, and he raises his hand as a gesture that can alternatively be viewed as a rebuke or salutation. But in any case, for men to laugh at this woman's breaking of conventions, acting and behaving in ways considered unbefitting of her age. And it's a sort of satire on the lust of older women, which was a frequent butt of Renaissance jokes."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Tabish Khan, art critic, The Londonist:
"There's something wonderfully modern about this painting because it shows an elderly woman dressing provocatively, which even in today's world, hundreds of years later, some people may frown upon. And that goes to show how advanced Massys' view was of the world. Even though he's painting centuries ago."

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Emma Capron, associate curator of Renaissance painting, National Gallery:
"In glazed terracotta of the time, in Italy, you have the tradition of featuring belle donne, beautiful women. And they often feature on clay dishes, and they would be exchanged as love tokens for a newly betrothed couple throughout the peninsula. Often small busts such as this one. In this case, however, far from being a beautiful woman, we have this woman with a bowed head who's tried really her best. She's put on all her most expensive outfits, colourful, and yet she bows her head and she has this sad grin. She knows she hasn't achieved the expected goal. And I love how the artist subverted the vibrant colours usually associated with Maiolica that makes it so appealing."
