The Levellers was a radical political movement, which emerged during the English Civil War in the 1640s. The Levellers supported Parliament and their ideas were popular within sections of the New Model Army. The Levellers campaigned for greater powers for the House of Commons, increased equality within the law and religious tolerance. The Levellers failed to gain popular support, but their ideas survived and inspired sections of the US Declaration of Independence in the 18th century.
