In 1993, at the age of three, Steve Sparks' daughter Kaitlin [Katie] was diagnosed with leukemia. From 1993 to 1996, Kaitlin received chemotherapy and other treatments at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware.
On May 26, 2011, in celebration of his daughter's 21st birthday, 18 years after she was diagnosed with leukemia, Steve Sparks - who is Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Nemours began bicycling more than 900 miles to pay tribute to the Nemours caregivers who helped make this dream
come true.
Steve arrived in Delaware at the gates of Nemours Mansion & Gardens, next to the hospital, on Friday, June 3 - and was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers that included some of Katie's care team from years ago, as well as Dr. Kevin Churchwell, CEO of Nemours/Alfred.I. duPont Hospital for Children's.
Steve's goal was to raise $100,000 for the Nemours Hematology/Oncology Division and on June 24, he reached that number.
Congratulations to Steve, to everyone who supported his bike ride -- and happy birthday, Katie!
