NERITES
GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Nerites is a minor figure in Greek mythology, said to be the son of the sea god Nereus and the oceanid Doris. He was described as a handsome and youthful sea-god, with the tail of a fish and the upper body of a man. According to legend, Nerites was the lover of the sea-goddess Aphrodite before she became associated with the god Ares. When Aphrodite left him for Ares, Nerites was said to have been transformed into a shellfish by his father Nereus as punishment for his arrogance and vanity. Despite his minor status in mythology, Nerites has been referenced in several works of art throughout history.
