Video: In this video I’ll tell you what wrist to take your blood pressure on. I’ll tell you why it matters and the the two life-threatening mis diagnoses that may occur as a result of it. Kevin Garce here, for more blood pressure videos like this one, click the subscribe button and the bell icon. Let's get right to it, most people don’t give much thought about what wrist to use when measuring their BP. The one used is mostly what’s more convenient or more comfortable for them. But what wrist you use should be already predetermined before taking your BP. So how do you know? It’s normal to have slightly different BP measurements between your right or left wrist or arm. Typically, 10 mmHg or less is expected. The American College of cardiology states , Which I link to down below, that at the initial doctor visit, blood pressure should be taken in both arms. The arm or wrist with the higher pressure, should be the one used for all measurements after. The American Heart Association, Harvard Health and the Texas Heart Institute all agree and warn how you can be mis diagnosed as a result. What kind of diagnosis? The first one is high BP. Well, let's say you typically measure on your left wrist and get consistent readings of 119/79 but unknown to you, the pressure in the right wrist is 131/83. Another missed diagnosis is peripheral artery disease or PAD. Let's say both wrists have a much larger difference than 10 mmHg, more like 30 or 40 difference indicating you may have PAD which long-term may lead to a heart attack or stroke. Most medical experts suggest checking both sides of your body every year to make sure your typical difference remains the same...
