Jochebed and Amram were the parents of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. Miriam was a granddaughter of one of the twelve sons of Jacob, who made up the twelve tribes of Israel, God’s covenantal people. Levi was Miriam’s grandfather. Levis offspring were later set aside as the high priests whose duty it was to care for the things of God and to serve His tabernacle.
Miriam was born in Egypt while the children of Israel were captives. We aren’t told if they participated in any form of organized worship while they were slaves. Pharaoh looked at the large number of Israelites and decided they had grown to large to be managed. He ordered all the male children to be killed at birth. When Jochebed gave birth to Moses, she hid him for several months. When she could no longer hide him she placed him in a basket and hid the basket in the reeds by the river.
Exodus 2:3-4 (NKJV) 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.
