The Special Composition Question - a question that has been explored in contemporary metaphysics. Philosophers believe that composition occurs when one or more objects are parts of another object. The Special Composition Question itself asks, for any two or more objects what have we got to do to those objects to get them to compose another object?
Prof. Tallant explores unrestricted mereological composition (universalism), mereological nihilism (the idea that there are no objects with proper parts), causal overdetermination and brutal composition as potential answers to the Special Composition Question.
Is there one true answer to the special composition question?
Prof. Tallant is the Subject Editor for Metaphsyics for the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy and an Associate Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Nottingham.
