In this episode we show you around one of the oldest zoos in the world, the Korkeasaari zoo in Helsinki. Formerly called as Helsinki zoo, it was established in 1889, making it one of the oldest zoos across the globe.
We visited the zoo in June this summer, where we got to see so many different animals like the giant Siberian tiger, majestic snow leopard, the camels from the deserts, Finnish brown bear, dancing peacocks, beautiful red panda and many more. Let’s explore the fauna and flora here together.
Korkeasaari zoo gets its name from the island it is situated in the Baltic sea. korkeasaari is one of some 330 islands in the Helsinki archipelago.
The zoo can be accessed by a ferry or a local bus from the Helsinki city centre. It provides home to a wide variety of animals and plant species.
The zoo area spreads all over the lush green island. It is a good example of modern zoos that works for the conservation of biodiversity.
Unlike traditional zoos with animals behind iron bars, here the animals are kept in more natural environments which replicates their original habitats.
The peafowls roam freely around flaunting their gorgeous multicoloured feathers and showcasing their elegant dance time and again for the onlookers.
We hope you liked today’s tour of the zoo. Do let us know about your experience in the comments below. We definitely wait for your feedback for this as well as our other videos.
