This shot of airflow around an airplane engine turbine blade shows the turbulence that can occur at the surface. The Phantom v1610 was valuable because it was able to capture a wide field-of-view because of its high resolution, while providing the speed and detail required to see the phenomena. The researchers are interested in how this turbulence occurs and what can be done to control it. This was shot at 1280 x 800 and 12,000 fps. This was illuminated by a 2W sheet of laser light. A 50mm lens was used. Many thanks for Assistant Professor Hideo Taniguchi from Iwate University for allowing us to use this amazing footage.
