Russia's defense ministry announced on Thursday that Russian warplanes launched attacks on Islamic State (IS) and Al-Nusra Front targets in Syria from Russian and Syrian bases as well as the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier.
According to the defense ministry, some of the aircraft took off from a Russian airbase, flying over 11,000 kilometers and completing two aerial refuelings en route to the targets. In addition, warplanes at from Hmeymim airbase in Syria and Su-33 fighter jets from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier also took part in the attacks. The fighter jets were responsible for air cover.
The attacks targeted sites such as weapons and ammunition warehouses and weapon-producing shops, the ministry said. They added that the positions of all the targets had been detected and verified through various channels before the airstrikes and the results were monitored by drones.
