Day 109: June 12
In the Kharkiv region, the Russians made a counterattack. As you remember the control over the village of Vesele has been changing a lot, and today it has changed once again. After the Russians were pushed out of this village around a week ago, they prepared a counterattack and successfully took it back. The Ukrainian General Staff also reported that the Russians are using their artillery to target the Ukrainian forces around Ternova and Rubizhne. After the Ukrainians made an unsuccessful attempt to take Ternova, this artillery strikes further impede regrouping and decrease the chances of a quick counterattack. If the previous week was successful for the Ukrainians, this week the Russians are leading in this direction.
In the north-east, there are some good and bad news. From the bad news, the Russians continue to achieve success in the Bohorodychne direction. After they managed to establish their positions in the suburbs of the village, they have been gradually increasing the area under their control. What makes holding this village even more complicated is that the Russians are now controlling the hills of Sviatohirsk, which are located in the rear of the Ukrainian troops. The Russians are also attacking Dolyna and Krasnopillia. Some sources suggest that the attack on Krasnipilla is coming from the south-west, which would require clearing the forest. From the good news, the Russian attack on Sydorove failed and they retreated back to Pryshyb. The Ukrainian troops in the villages of Dolyna and Krasnopillia also managed to repel the enemy’s attack, which signals that the Ukrainians have been preparing to move to this southern front line and ensured that the enemy will not destroy it like a house of cards, gaining 15 km in a few days. The Russians only have a possibility for incremental improvements, not a breakthrough.
In the east, the Ukrainians managed to withstand an intense and relentless attack of the Russians. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian attack near Popasna was successfully stopped: the Russian forces assaulting Mykolaivka and Berestove were met with an overwhelming fire and were forced to retreat to their previous positions. Right now they are gathering more forces for the upcoming second wave of storming these settlements. The Russians also tried to attack Nova Kamianka, but suffered severe losses and quickly retreated to Volodymyrivka. To the west of Popasna, the Russians are using their artillery and aviation to bomb the town of Porkovsk and Bakhmut. When it comes to the Hirske-Zolote pocket, the Russians did not manage to make a successful advancement – the Ukrainian forces here are still holding their defense line. The Ukrainian forces in Toshkivka continue to be under heavy storming – the attacks do not cease. In the northern part of this region, the Ukrainians managed to repel an attack in the village of Metolkine, while the Russians again took control over the majority of areas in the town of Sieverodonetsk. Given that the Russians also control the Sieverodontsk airport, this puts the Ukrainian troops in Metolkino in a disadvantageous position, with little possibility to retreat. Finally, the Russians continue to shell the towns along the local river, while they are preparing to try to cross it in multiple places, possibly in the following week. Despite a successful week, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine once again emphasized the unsustainability of this defense line, and requested the president to retreat. It takes a lot of resources to defend and supply these small villages, and these resources are about to come to end.
In the south-east, the Russians shelled 7 towns but no attacks happened on the ground. The same concerns the whole southern direction.
