BODYWORK/TRIM
Assembled at Dodge Main in Hamtramck, Michigan, this spectacular pentastar is a mostly-original survivor that's as close to factory fresh as a 45 year old car can get. According to its feature in Vintage Road Car, the fiery coupe met its original, long-term owner at Sacramento California's Fair Plymouth in November of 1969. And that owner, a mild-mannered farmer who enjoyed a bit of street racing, immediately swapped its intimidating Hemi signage for run-of-the-mill 383 markings. Naturally, since this Plymouth was purchased as more of a toy than everyday transportation, mileage was kept to a minimum. And, circa 1989, when the farmer started experiencing wrist problems that made the car's Pistol Grip Shifter too hard to deal with, he decided that preservation was his best option. Fast-forward through 20 years of impeccable storage and the coupe breached hiding to meet its second owner. And the rest, as they say, is lust worthy high-octane history!
ENGINE
Toss this coupe's light hood and you'll find an original, 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 that's authenticated by a famous 2468330 casting number and matching partial VIN. As Plymouth's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a large, Hemi Orange block that hangs vintage, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air falls through correct Carter carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by high quality Chrysler Electronic Suppression cables, which are snapped onto a correct points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big, 26-inch radiator that's paired to pliable hoses via old school squeeze clamps.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Slide under this exclusive E-Body and you'll find surprisingly clean bones that have brazenly withstood 45 years of road time. Correct undercoating highlights exceptionally solid floors that appear just as the factory left them. Behind the Hemi, an original A833 4-speed sends power to an original Dana 60 Track Pack axle, which features correct, 3.54 gears. Naturally, that spirited driveline rides a factory-spec suspension, which is fitted with traditional manual steering. Stops come courtesy of standard power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by large-diameter tubes, which bend around an H-shaped crossover, welded mufflers and requisite resonators. And all this MoPar goodness rolls on Rallye Red steelies, which twist F60-15 Firestone Wide Oval 60s around satin Plymouth Division center caps.
INTERIOR
Swivel this Plymouth's doors and you'll find a correct Black interior that appears to be mostly original equipment. The front bucket and rear bench seats are wrapped in pliable vinyl covers that still display very well. Below those seats, color-keyed carpet centers a correct, wood-trimmed console between Xq˜'cudaXq˜ branded floor mats and a correct Pistol Grip Shifter. In front of those panels, an original dash seats correct Rallye telemetry above a correct Chrysler Solid State. And in front of the driver, an attractive, wood-trimmed steering wheel mixes subtle form with major function.
