24 drivers took the start at the Belgian 423 Kms Grand Prix. It was a triumphant come-back for the Italian Ferraris, which had not won the race since 1956. The winning Ferrari was driven by American Phil Hill, who averaged 127.9mph, with Wolfgang Von Trips, a young German second, also ina Ferrari. Richie Ginther, U.S. and Olivier Gendebien, Belgium were 3 and 4, completing the Ferrari sweep. John Surtees, of Britain, raced to the front at the start in his Cooper but quickly fell behind. He held himself close to the leaders and finished 5th, the first of the less powerful pack of Cooper, BRM Porche and Lotus cars behind the Ferraris. Stirling Moss (Lotus) was sixth.
