Today, I want to discuss one of the biggest mistakes you can make when starting out with your SaaS marketing. This is a mistake we almost made but thankfully avoided, which would have continued to harm us to this day. I want to break down what it is, why it may seem like a great solution for getting more clients, and why it can ultimately backfire.

While SaaS LTDs can be a quick growth strategy, they come with significant downsides. I’ll cover both the good and bad aspects, share our experience, and help you make an informed decision.

The allure of LTDs is that you can make a lot of money quickly. For instance, we made almost $88,000 in a few weeks with a discontinued SaaS product by offering a $99 lifetime deal. It wasn’t just about the money; we also validated the idea. However, eventually, we refunded everyone and discontinued the product.

There are two scenarios where offering an LTD makes sense:
1. If you don’t have a product yet and want to validate an idea before building it. Create a landing page, set a pricing box for a lifetime deal, and see if people buy.
2. If you have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and want to launch it into the market.

However, if you already have an established SaaS, offering an LTD doesn’t make sense. LTDs are primarily a way to validate your idea and get some quick cash.

The downsides of LTDs include:
1. **Overloaded Support:** You’ll be stuck supporting these users forever, as they have lifetime access to your software.
2. **No Recurring Revenue:** LTDs mean one-time payments, not adding much long-term revenue.
3. **Value Perception:** Offering big discounts can make your product seem cheaper and mess with future pricing.
4. **AppSumo Users:** Deal hunters on platforms like AppSumo might not stick around or engage much with your product, providing less valuable feedback.
5. **Non-Ideal Customers:** These users often complain more and demand a lot, potentially becoming a long-term burden.
6. **Brand Image:** Being associated with LTDs can make your brand seem like a budget option.
7. **Refund Headaches:** Platforms like AppSumo have a 60-day refund policy, leading to potential high refunds.
8. **Communication Overload:** Be prepared for an influx of support tickets, overwhelming you if you’re just starting out.

Despite these challenges, there are some success stories. Some companies have significantly grown their revenue through LTDs on platforms like AppSumo. However, it's essential to weigh the potential long-term drawbacks against the immediate benefits.

In conclusion, while LTDs for SaaS can provide quick cash and initial validation, they come with substantial risks and long-term challenges. If you decide to go this route, ensure it’s within the right context and be prepared for the potential consequences.
