(with free hyperspace speed shipping), which is a little more than other p-bass kits. But if you look a little closer, you’ll see why:
It’s a lot different from other P-bass kits, in that it has some very unique styling. It’s built more like the original ’51 P-bass, but instead of the single coil pickup, it has a musicman style humbucker. It also features a maple fretboard, and a beautiful pearloid pickguard. Looking closely at the basswood it has a much better wood grain than any basswood kit I’ve built, and even has some flaming in some areas. Like other kits, this one does have a small wood filler spot, but it was done much better than the cheaper kits. It’s hardly noticeable as is, and under a stain will probably disappear completely. The routing in the body is clean, and this kit does have a hole drilled for the bridge ground wire connection (PRAISE THE LORD). The neck and fretboard both feature excellent woodgrain as well, so unlike that cheap eBay bass kit, you can actually make a beautiful instrument out of this thing. The headstock is preshaped, which may be good or bad depending on what you’re after. Personally, I like blank paddle headstocks so that I can cut it however I want, and again, personally, I feel this shape is pretty ugly. But I think I’ll still be able to save it with some careful custom work later… Also looking at the neck I noticed right off the bat that the frets have already been leveled and crowned. Not the prettiest job I’ve seen, but if you don’t have the tools or skills to level and crown frets yourself, this saves you a lot of time and money. The hardware seems to be of better quality as well. Still not high end hardware by any means, but I especially noticed that tuners are much better quality than I’ve seen on my other kits. The electronics are sort of prewired, the pickup and output jack do not come connected, so soldering is required. Looking closer at the electronics, the color coding was funky and inconsistent. For example, the hot and ground connections kept changing colors throughout the wiring. Depending on where it was connected, the ground cable could be black, white, or green. And the hot wire could either be black, or yellow…see how that could confuse someone? Especially since black was used as both a hot and a ground connection. Lastly, even though the neck and body are supposed to be a matched set, the neck pocket had way too much slop in it. This is really just not acceptable. The good news is that, like a neck that fits too tight, it can be fixed surprisingly easy, and if you want, I’ll show you how I did that in a future video. Also worth mentioning, the kit did come with general building instructions, but they weren’t specific to this particular bass kit, so I didn’t really find them all that useful.
Build time was a little over an hour. It would’ve been easily way under an hour except for three things: 1) I got confused on the wiring because of the miss matched colors, 2) I had to fix the sloppy neck pocket. 3) I broke a neck screw during installation and struggled to get the broken screw out of the neck and body without doing any permanent damage. I finished the build with some spare neck screws I had. but if this happens to you, you need not fear! one quick email to Bragianmusician.com support and Zane from bargain musician had a new set of neck screw in my mailbox within two days! Seriously, you guys are killing it over there. Excellent customer service. Setting up this bass was really easy because the frets were already leveled, so it naturally can play with a nice low action. These strings are garbage though, the low E string is almost completely dead, and these other strings have kinks in them from being wadded up in the packaging.
So here’s my summary:
Things that are cool:
Beautiful and unique looking bass
Great tone from a great pickup (fun mix between p-bass and musicman style tone)
Frets are leveled and crowned (which makes for an…)
Easy build and setup
Lightspeed fast free shipping
and excellent customer service from bargainmusician.com
