On July 12, 1945, the Red Army from the NKVD, assisted by the Security Office and the People's Army of Poland, carried out a pacification operation in and around the Augustow Forest. The Communists arrested 7,000 people at the time, 600 never returned home. They were deported in an unknown direction and murdered.
It was the biggest communist crime in post-war Poland. The victims were activists of the independence underground and the local population, favoring the partisans.
