This is not intended to be a complete PC building guide. It is a warning against a few of the most common mistakes people make on each of the major components of a PC.
Outline:
Monitor:
Set Up: High refresh rate cable connection & setting in display settings
Set Up Bonus: Don’t plug your monitor into your mobo HDMI output
Planning: Cheaping out on monitor, or buying high res for low end pc

GPU:
Set Up: Use the correct pcie slot. Top is usually best but check your mobo manual
Planning: Spending too much on an AIB cooler design.

CPU:
Set Up: Check compatibility with cooler, thermal paste, don’t bend the pins!
Planning: Don’t spend too much for gaming! GPU is more important, so tilt your budget in that direction

RAM:
Set Up: Enable XMP in your BIOS
Set Up Bonus: Make sure they are in the right slots. Check your mobo manual to be sure.
Planning: Use two sticks! (Two 8GB is better than one 16GB)
Planning Bonus: Don’t spend too much. Around 3000mhz is the sweetspot.

Storage:
Set Up: M.2 slots will often disable certain SATA connections. Check your manual
Planning: Buy an SSD. Just do it. HDD only is completely outdated.

Motherboard:
Set Up: Consider building outside of case first to diagnose issues. And read your manual. Especially for all the annoying little header pins.
Planning: Don’t overspend! Does it have enough ports? Is it compatible with your CPU? Then it is probably good enough. Higher end boards are often diminishing returns and good for overclocking, etc. Easy place to waste build budget.

Cooler:
Set Up: Thermal paste. And some can rotate to better fit RAM.
Planning: Check compatibility and which brackets it comes with. RAM height!

Case:
Set Up: Bottom intakes, DO NOT PLACE ON CARPET!
Planning: Easy to overspend. Check size compatibility with cooler and GPU.

PSU:
Set Up: Do NOT mix cables from different PSU manufacturers!
Planning: Quality! Not just watts. But also don’t overdo it!
