A theatre show in Egypt's Ismailia city celebrated the birth of Prophet Muhammad in an annual festival known as Mawlid.
STORY-LINE:
Egyptians in the northeastern city of Ismailia celebrated on Tuesday the birth of Islam's Prophet Muhammad during the Mawlid festival.
The event included a theatre show featuring music and dance performances.
Ismailia locals and government officials headed to the city's beach club to watch the show.
The show also highlighted the country's "achievements", said vocalist Ahmad el-Kahlawi, who was referring to events in the 1973 Arab Israeli war.
Egypt annually celebrates the anniversary of the Egyptian army's Oct. 6 crossing of the Suez Canal during the 1973 war with Israel.
In 1973, Egyptian forces launched a surprise attack across the Suez Canal, cutting through the Bar Lev line of Israeli defenses in the war that culminated in the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.
The war is celebrated for Egypt's initial battlefield victories over Israel, and is a national holiday traditionally celebrated with military parades, airshows and pro-military rallies.
Islamic occasions are marked according to a lunar calendar and their occurrence shifts by a matter of a few days every year.
The show is celebrating the two events because of the proximity of the Mawlid and the 6 Oct. anniversary this year.
As the artists performed on stage, a large screen showed footage of war and military drills in the background. The show runs from Oct. 19 to 28.
