The Malaysian navy foiled a pirate attack on a Singapore-managed tanker off its east coast with the help of navies from Singapore and Indonesia on Saturday.
After receiving an alert about an attempted attack at 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, the Republic of Singapore Navy deployed its patrol vessel, the RSS Gallant, which was the first ship to arrive at the scene at 12:45 a.m.
According to the International Maritime Bureau, the pirates fled after navy patrol boats from Indonesia and Singapore approached.
The IMB said the tanker's crew and cargo were safe, but provided no further details about the tanker or the pirates.
Last week, an AFP report citing the United Nations said South-east Asia had become a global piracy hot spot, with attacks on ships reaching 150 last year after being on the rise since 2010.
