For a boater in distress, VHF radios may be our best option in a boat emergency situation, but for a recreational boater, they are not that easy to use. In this video I cover a few of the major problems with basic handheld marine VHF radios for boating that keep many recreational boaters from having a VHF radio on their boat or using a VHF radio in an emergency.

Many basic handheld VHF boat radios do not offer DSC calling and GPS. Without these features, not only are VHF radios challenging for a novice to use while boating, they are not as useful in an emergency as radios equipped with DSC and GPS that are set up with a MMSI on our boats.
