The Germans made a two pronged attack on the left flank of the Allied trenches early in the morning. They took the British trenches, and the British attempted to drive them out, but they were cut down during their counterattack. The Americans and French held the Germans back while mortars went to work. This is the view of the 30th Division mortar pit, with two Stokes mortars. The 120th Infantry, 30th Division is attached to the 27th Division at Newville and are in the BEF, not the AEF
